Local business owners and local educators converged on the Griffin Regional Welcome Center Wednesday afternoon for a networking expo.

Bill Millican, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Beaverbrook Elementary School, was one of the teachers who attended the event.

“This is the first time I’ve come over here,” he said.

He said he attended the Kids in Need event earlier in the day at Spalding High School and heard there were businesses setting up booths at the Griffin-Spalding Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s going great,” he said. “It’s obviously been a great benefit for all of us.”

He praised those in the community who are willing to help out and make the coming school year as good as possible. At the event, he had received index cards, scratch pads, construction paper, pens, markers and a desk calendar.

Dan Dupree represented Juice Plus at the event.

“We’re educating kids about the power of nutrition,” he said.

His company grinds up whole fruits and vegetables into powder to create capsules for adults and gummies for children. He said since teachers are in contact with children, they are in an ideal position to educate their students.

“Great,” he said when asked about the reception he had received. “Everybody’s concerned about their health.”

Blake Madaris and Bonnie Starr represented Truett’s Grill.

“We’re partners in (education) with (26 to 29) schools in Spalding County,” Madaris said.

He said he and Starr were there to support the schools the restaurant is partnered with. They gave out prizes for teachers to give their students and fed other vendors.

Angela Ware, a second-grade teacher at Cowan Road Elementary School, also attended.

“Basically, just wanted to see some of the people who were here and what they had to offer,” she said.

She said many local businesses were represented at the Kids In Need event and she wanted to meet local businessmen and businesswomen in person. She discovered that Peachtree Education Station in Peachtree City is near a business she regularly visits.

“We are partners with schools here in Griffin,” said Kimberly Lecroy, the manager at the Spalding Village Great Clips. “All the elementary schools.”

She came to give out coupons to teachers, as well as pencils, pens and other school supplies.
