At the end of qualifying on Friday, 20 people had qualified for 13 local elected positions.

Several of the incumbents will be running unopposed, while incumbent County Commissioner Bob Gilreath faces two challengers in the Democratic Primary. A Republican candidate is also seeking the seat now held by Gilreath.

The following eight incumbents are running unopposed: Chief Magistrate Judge Rita Cavanaugh, State Court Judge Sidney Esary, Coroner Sonny Foster, Tax Commissioner Sylvia Hollums, Sheriff Wendell Beam, Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education members James R. Westbury Jr., District 2, and Barbara Jo Cook, District 4, as well as District 1 Spalding County Board of Commissioners member Gwen Flowers-Taylor. Foster, Hollums and Beam are running as Republicans and Flowers-Taylor as a Democrat, while the other unopposed positions are nonpartisan.

Incumbent District 4 County Commissioner Eddie Freeman is being challenged in the Republican primary by Bart Miller Jr. Incumbent Clerk of Superior Court Marcia Norris is also being challenged in the Republican primary by Edith Ray.

Gilreath, who represents District 3 and had previously said he may not run again, qualified Friday. He faces two challengers in the Democratic primary, Rita Johnson and Gregory McClarin, on July 31. The winner of that contest will face Republican Michael Renew in November.

There are also four candidates for Probate Court judge, Gerald Bailey, Jan Hunt, Kaye Landrum Norris and Cary Pope. They are seeking to succeed Probate Court Judge DeWitt Simonton, who announced he will not seek re-election.

Voters have until July 2 to register to vote in the July 31 election and the runoff, if needed, on Aug. 21.
