BOE discusses school closings

The Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education met Saturday for a retreat to further discuss cost-saving proposals for the fiscal year 2013, among other things.

A central issue in the discussion was the recommendation by Superintendent Curtis Jones, based on the proposal by a cost-reduction committee, to close one of the school system’s 11 elementary schools by the end of the current school year — a measure that is estimated to save the school system approximately $500,000 in FY 2013.
