Wells scored 22 points (including 6 of 7 from three) to help first-place Jonesboro win its 7th straight game to improve to 17-4 overall and 11-1 in region play while fifth-place Spalding lost its bid to win 2 straight games and falls to 8-10, 5-7.
Spalding started the game on fire, scoring the first 4 points of the game and soon led 8-2 at the 4:45 mark of the first quarter. Unfortunately for the Jags, the iron became unkind to them while the Cards heated up. Jonesboro embarked on a 13-0 run to take a 15-8 lead and that led to a 21-11 advantage at the end of the first. Wells sank three treys and DeAntre Mack hit two more from downtown in that quarter.
Jonesboro cooled off a bit in the second, but the Jags couldn’t trim the deficit as they missed 10 shots and 5 free throws in the period. Spalding was outscored 14-8 and trailed 35-19 at the half.
The Cards pulled away in the third quarter, as Wells and teammate Patrick Petty sank two treys each in the period. The Jags shot a bit better in the third, but they faced too big a deficit. They trailed 51-33 before falling behind 56-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
Jonesboro coasted in the fourth quarter and midway through it, both teams emptied their benches. Petty added 11 points and Cameron Sutton chipped in 8 for Jonesboro, which was 10 of 18 from the 3-point arc.
Terence Brittian was the only Jag in double figures with 13 points. Jequarrian Berry was the next closest with 7 points for Spalding, which was only 3 of 14 from behind the arc. The Jags hosted crosstown and region foe Griffin Saturday and hosts subregion foe North Clayton Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. on Senior Night.
