PERRY — The Griffin Christian Crusaders won their third straight game Tuesday night, defeating The Westfield School 62-49 in GISA non-region action on the road.

Griffin Christian improves to 4-2 overall while Westfield drops to 1-2.

Westfield took an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Crusaders led 29-24 at the half and 43-34 at the end of three quarters. The Crusaders’ lead fell to seven late in the fourth, but they hit their free throws down the stretch to win the game.

“Westfield is a pretty good team. We made 27 turnovers and got in foul trouble as well, but we pulled it out,” said Crusaders head coach Mic Savage. “It was a good team win for us.”

GC got balanced scoring again, as Jonathan Hammond led the team with 18 points, Aaron McCray added 12 and Wil Savage scored 10. Taylor Dunn added 9 points and 12 rebounds and Aqil Gilani chipped in 8 points for the Crusaders, who travel to Macon to play Mount de Sales Friday at 8 p.m.

The Crusaders took care of business Monday night, getting an easy 61-43 win over Solid Rock on the road. Jonathan Hammond led GC with 20 points and 5 assists, Aaron McCray added 14 points and Taylor Dunn chipped in 11. Wil Savage also added 5 assists and Hunter Ott snagged 6 rebounds for the Crusaders, who played all subs in the fourth quarter.

Westfield 79, GC 21 (girls): PERRY -- The Griffin Christian Lady Crusaders basketball team put up a lot of shots, but couldn’t hit them and lost to The Westfield School 79-21 Tuesday evening on the road. GC (3-3) has lost two straight games.

If you’re looking for a silver lining to this blowout, last year GC lost to Westfield 96-13. Last season, Westfield made it to the GISA Class AAA state title game, losing to Arlington Christian.

“We barely put up shots against Westfield last year; at least we were able to compete a bit better this year against them,” said GC head coach David Hammond.

Brittany Foster led GC with 5 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks and 4 steals. Leyah Brown had 3 assists for GC, which plays at another strong team in Mount de Sales Friday at 6:30 p.m.
