Johnson won by 1,369 votes, getting 2,239 votes or 71.95 percent to Republican Michael Renew’s 870 votes or 27.96 percent. There were also with three write-ins.
Johnson will replace incumbent Commissioner Bob Gilreath, who she defeated in the three-candidate Democrat primary. Gilreath finished a distant third with only 23 votes in the Democrat primary to Johnson, who won without a run-off with runner-up Gregory McClarin.
Tuesday night, 3,476 or 61.38 percent of 5,673 registered voters came out in District 3. Johnson thanked the Democratic Party, her campaign staff. “but most importantly, all the people who voted for me.”
She said Tuesday night, “I am so humbled they trust me. I am real excited to prove myself and show they made the right decision.”
Johnson said she is interested in working to bring jobs here, working with the schools to improve the graduation rate and crime in the district. “That part needs to be handled,” she said.
Johnson will join Republican Bart Miller of District 4 as new commissioners in January. Miller defeated incumbent Eddie Freeman in the Republican primary.
District 1 Commissioner Gwen Flowers-Taylor was unopposed in her re-election bid. The following other candidates were also re-elected unopposed:
• State Senator District 16, incumbent Republican Ronnie Chance of Tyrone.
• District Attorney, incumbent Republican Scott Ballard.
• Clerk of Superior Court, incumbent Republican Marcia Norris.
• Sheriff, incumbent Republican Wendell Beam.
• Tax Commissioner, incumbent Republican Sylvia Hollums.
• Coroner, incumbent Republican Sonny Foster.
• Towaliga Soil & Water District Supervisor, candidate Danny C. Meadows.
