Upon their arrival they had contact with a female who had evidence of being a victim of an assault. The victim reported that the male inside the home grabbed her around the neck, choked her and held a knife to her throat and said that he would kill her.
Officers attempted to speak to the male inside the residence and he refused to come out and made several threats to the responding officer.
Officer Adam Wall observed three children inside the home and asked the male to allow the children to come outside. The male, identified as 43-year-old Michael C. Massar of 509 North 16th St., refused to release the children.
Officers made several requests to Massar in an attempt to free the children and he continued to act in a violent manner toward the officers and refused to release the children. Due to the potential danger to the children and threats to the responding officer a decision was made to activate the Special Response Team (SRT).
After negotiations broke down SRT team members were able to enter the residence, free the children and take Massar into custody inside the home.
Massar has been charged with one count of aggravated assault (Family Violence Act) and three counts of cruelty to children (Family Violence Act). Additional charges are pending, Griffin Police said in a press release Wednesday night.
