When officers arrived at the scene, they found 53-year-old Stephen Turner with a steel cable wrapped around his neck. The other end of the cable was attached to the bridge. GPD Lt. Darrell Dix, Lt. Mike Richardson and Cpl. Todd Harris were able to work their way close enough to Turner, and at about 8:25 a.m., they pulled him away from the ledge.
The circumstances of Turner’s suicide attempt were unclear. “He was upset over something that has taken place in his life,” said GPD Capt. Dwayne Jones.
The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office and Griffin Fire-Rescue assisted the GPD during the incident, which caused noticeable traffic jams.
“We had to secure the roadway. It was quite a (traffic) backup, but there was really nothing we could do about it,” said Jones.
Police transported Turner, who was described as being from the Griffin area, to Spalding Regional Medical Center for medical evaluation. As of Thursday afternoon, no charges had been filed against Turner.
