The annual Regional One-Act Play Competition for Class AAAA took place Oct. 19 at Gordon State College. And for the first time since participating, Griffin High School finished as champion.

Topping seven other high schools that day at the college in Barnesville, among them Spalding High, Griffin High School received the winning nod by three judges for its performance of “Once On This Island Jr.”

The musical tells the story of a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. When the boy is returned to his people, the fantastical gods, who rule the island, guide the girl on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
