The death of Lance Cpl. Christopher Blake Rodgers was a blow to this community that will be felt for many months and years to come.

We extend our sympathy to the family of Rodgers.

Like the death of any service member, Rodgers’ death was heartbreaking.

According to Allison Moore, a friend of Rodgers’ family, Rodgers decided he wanted to be a Marine when he was only 11 years old. His decision was made after seeing the devastating terrorist attacks that occurred Sept. 11, 2001.

He followed through with his plan, and was killed Wednesday while on patrol in the Helmand Province in southwest Afghanistan.

What’s important to remember is that Rodgers was in Afghanistan on behalf of each and every one of us. He was helping to patrol in an area known as a Taliban stronghold.

It takes a special type of bravery to serve in the military, and especially in a combat zone. We salute Rodgers and all members of the military who put themselves in harm’s way.

While we cannot truly feel the pain felt by this young Marine’s family, we can honor Rodgers by remembering his sacrifice and the sacrifices of all members of the military.

And we can hope that this county, state and nation will continue to produce citizens who are willing to man the front lines, just like Christopher Blake Rodgers.
