Griffin has created Wi-Fi hotspots across the city.

Initially created to allow city police officers to file their reports online and not have to return to the police station, said Jack Poland, the city’s chief information officer, the hotspots have now been opened up “for the citizens to get more usage out of it.”

The city is touting the public Wi-Fi, or wireless Internet access, as a service “for the downtown business professional, visitor or patron.”

Poland said the service is managed by the city’s IT department.

“It’s very stable, we’re very happy with it,” he said.

Currently the service is available within about 500 yards of 11 locations across the city including the three city fire stations, the police station, Griffin-Spalding Airport, One Griffin Center, the Welcome Center, Central Services, the Three Rivers office on North Hill Street, Camp Northern near the hospital and golf course at City Park and at the fueling center near Southern Crescent Technical College.

Poland said the Three Rivers office on North Hill Street reaches the parking lot behind the building. He said there are a lot of users on the fueling center and Fire Station 2 locations from Southern Crescent Technical College.

A map of the locations is available on the city’s website. Click on Departments, Administrative Services, then Information Technology. Poland said in the future, he hopes to put a signal on the top of the One Griffin Center building, which should cover most of downtown.
