Wednesday is Halloween and there’s a couple of community events just for trick-or-treaters.

The Downtown Griffin Trick-or-Treat Park at Sixth Spook-tacular is from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 31. Following that one, local law enforcement will hold the annual Safety Treat in the parking lot of North Griffin Square “beginning at 6 p.m., until we run out of candy or kids,” said Griffin Police Lt. Morris Pike.

As in past years, the event features equipment from Griffin Police Department, Spalding County Sheriff’s Office, and local wreckers. It is provided by local law enforcement and Center Point Church as a safe alternative to trick-or-treat, said Pike.

Also for Halloween, Blackshear Photography Studio will, as it has for 13 years, hold the Together We Can food drive to benefit the Five Loaves and Two Fish Food Pantry. Simply bring 10 cans of food (or make a $15 tax-deductible donation), which includes free sitting fee and one 5-inch by 7-inch photo and four wallet–size photos.

The Downtown Griffin Trick-or-Treat this year begins at the Park at Sixth at 4 p.m. The trick-or-treating is for children ages 12 and younger who must be in costume and accompanied by an adult, said Griffin Main Street Program Manger Kira Harris-Braggs.

Along with trick-or-treating, the Spook-tacular also includes Zumba in the Park, presented by Zumba Instructors of Griffin, as well as the First Baptist Church of Griffin’s annual Fall Festival featuring inflatables, games and other amusements,

Parents can pick up a map of participating downtown businesses and a free trick-or-treat bag at the Park at Sixth. The bag will be filled with flyers, coupons and other incentives from downtown businesses to encourage parents to come back downtown on another day to shop, dine and do business, explained Harris-Braggs.

Maps will also be available at the City of Griffin Customer Service Office on Hill Street. The maps will list and show the location of all the participating shops, offices and restaurants within the walkable, historic downtown area (6th Street to 9th Street, Taylor Street to Broad Street, Hill Street, Solomon Street, Wall Street and Bank Street).

Participating locations will have a sign on the storefront. These include Kentucky Fried Chicken, Championship Martial Arts, Reeves Cleaners, ALY Cakes, The Tiger Lily, Hill Street Market and Gourmet Pops, City of Griffin Customer Service, Spalding County Democratic Party at Jannah’s Downtown Café, Greer Insurance Group, Firehouse Subs, Curves, Bunn’s Cleaners, ‘Stache Studio, Agape Computers, Bank Street, B’Unique Hair Salon, Liberty Technology and GiGi’s Antique Griffin.

Participating businesses from outside of the downtown area will be handing out treats from tables at the Park at Sixth. Harris-Braggs said the following organizations will be at the Park at Sixth – Championship Martial Arts, Chick-fil-A Griffin Dwarf House, James Family Farm, Spalding County, Griffin Main Street Program, Downtown Griffin Business Alliance, F.E.T.I.S.H. Social Club, Griffin Lodge #317 PHA, Stack’em Tite Ryderz Motorcycle Club and Mid-Georgia Pest Control.

For the Downtown Spook-tacular, the following streets will be closed during the event – East Solomon Street, eastbound only, between Hill and and 5th streets; 6th Street, both ways between Bank and East Solomon streets, but businesses in the area will be open and available for walk-up access.
