A Jackson man — 51-year-old Mark Fischer — was injured in a two-vehicle wreck Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Wilson Road and Georgia Highway 16.

According to Georgia State Patrol Sgt. 1st Class John Corbett, the incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. when Fischer, who was driving a Toyota Corolla, struck the Honda Pilot occupied by 71-year-old Robert Benjamin Hild, of Ashland, Va.

“Mr. Fischer, driver of the Corolla, was traveling eastbound on Georgia Highway 16, approaching the intersection with Wilson Road, and Mr. Hild was traveling southbound on Wilson Road, approaching Highway 16,” Corbett said. “Mr. Fischer ran the red light, striking Mr. Hild’s vehicle in the passenger side, causing Mr. Hild’s vehicle to overturn in the intersection.”

Spalding Regional Medical Center Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to the scene and removed Fischer — who sustained minor injuries — from his vehicle, but Corbett said the impact caused no entrapment, and Hild was not injured in the collision. Fischer was transported to the emergency room of Spalding Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Corbett said a portion of the roadway was temporarily obstructed as personnel awaited wreckers to remove both vehicles.

“One lane was shut down, but the (Spalding County) Sheriff’s Office handled traffic direction, so there wasn’t much of a delay,” he said.

Corbett said Fischer was charged with failure to obey a traffic-control device.
