Spalding High will try to salvage an otherwise disappointing season when it travels tonight to take on winless Forest Park at Tara Stadium in Jonesboro in the season-ending game for both teams. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Since a 3-all tie in the season opener against than Class AA No. 2 state-ranked Lamar County and a 20-13 win against Rutland in the second game of the season, Spalding (1-7-1) has lost seven in a row including a 42-0 setback last week against crosstown rival Griffin High.

“My only concern is that we can get up emotionally and play a good game after playing a big rivalry game,” second-year Spalding head coach Nick Davis said.

Forest Park (0-9) has fared even worse, being outscored by an average of 42-5 during a season where the low point was a 31-17 loss last week to Mt. Zion-Jonesboro which was also winless going into the game.

For Davis and his team, which are averaging 6 ppg for and 21 ppg against, numbers mean little or nothing at this stage.

“We just want to send our seniors out their last game at Spalding High School as winners,” he said. “For the guys who are returning we want them to go out and play well and have a good showing to build for the off season with a little bit of momentum.”

Spalding still has a bad taste in its mouth from last year’s season-ending game.

“Last year we went into overtime at Locust Grove and ended up losing that game,” said Davis. “The kids still had a great off season, but it was still disappointing and we don’t want to end that way this year.”

Davis is hopeful tonight’s outcome will be different, despite last week’s 42-point loss — the team’s worst of the season.

“The kids still responded well this week and we had a good week of preparation,” added Davis.

Expect the Jags to start two seniors — Fabian Wilson at outside linebacker and Jordan Weems at defensive end — tonight who have seen little playing time until now. Davis called both, “good program kids.” Two underclassmen, freshman Henry Hart at center and Brodarius Hamm at nose guard, are also expected to see some time to, “get them going into the off season.”
