The funds for those scholarships came from the money the Kiwanis Club generated during its most recent Pancake Day in February.
According to Scholarship Committee Chairman Larry Foster, the Kiwanis Club had received 37 scholarship applications this year, and in order to qualify, students had to be graduating high school students, be attending college for the first time and reside or attend high school in Spalding County.
The Kiwanis Club handed out 10 William A. Gregory scholarships of $1,000 each. The recipients were Ashlyn Coffey, Alexa Haines, Sarah Hill, Natalia Jones, Holli Kulp, Bethany Lopinsky, Emily Peek, Leah Slaughter, Allison Waters and Alex Wood.
The club also gave away three Earl F. “Rip” Savage scholarships at $1,500 each. Those recipients were Olivia O’Brien, Phillip Simmons and Jordan Tapley.
For the first time this year, the Kiwanis Club awarded the Davis Peeples scholarship, which was established by Myrtle Peeples in memory of her late husband, Davis Peeples. This scholarship — in the amount of $1,000 — went to A’ariyana Corbin.
All students received a certificate on Wednesday, as the actual funds are placed in a trust account at the accredited institution for use at the time of enrollment.
