LOCAL SPORTS BRIEFS: Athletes, parents invited to college head-start seminar

All student athletes and their parents in the Griffin-Spalding School System are invited to attend a college head-start seminar at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28 in the commons at Griffin High where a compliance director from Morehouse College will be the featured speaker.

The seminar is dedicated to helping the high school athlete put together a package to help make the college sports recruiting process successful.Those who attend will receive athletic, academic and personal advice. To learn more, contact Griffin High at (770) 229-3752.

MIDDLE SCHOOL, PARKS & REC NIGHT: The Griffin High School Athletic Department is hosting its annual Middle School and Parks & Recreation Basketball Teams Night on Friday, Jan. 25 during the Griffin High vs. Upson-Lee basketball games at Griffin High's gym, The House.

All coaches must bring their players and all players must wear their jerseys for free entry into the GHS vs. Upson-Lee games Friday evening. All middle school and recreational basketball teams in Spalding County are welcome to attend. Players not with their coaches and not dressed in official team jerseys must pay the regular ticket price for the games.

The day will start with the junior varsity boys basketball game at 4:30 p.m., followed by the girls varsity game at 6 p.m. and the varsity boys game (the last game of the night) at 7:30 p.m.

Do not miss this special event as the Griffin High School Athletic Department honors our youth basketball teams!

LITTLE LEAGUE: Registration for the Spring 2013 season is going through Feb. 9. If you need to register in person, you can do so at AMBUCS Park.Fee to play this year is $125 for baseball and $75 for softball, but you can get a discount if sign up online and pay in full.Tryouts dates and times for baseball are as follows: 5/6 Division, 6:30 p.m., Feb. 11; 7/8 Division, 6:30 p.m., Feb. 12; 9/10 Division, 6:30 p.m., Feb. 14; and 11-13 Division 6:30 p.m., Feb. 15. Drafts for baseball will be 6:30 p.m., the day after tryouts, excluding 11/13 Division which will be right after tryouts and 3/4 Division will be at 6:30 p.m., Feb. 11.

Tryout dates and times for softball are as follows: 7/8 Division, 10 a.m., Feb. 16; 9/10 Division, 11:30 a.m., Feb. 16; 11/12 Division, 1 p.m., Feb. 16; and 13-&-up Division, 2:30 p.m., Feb. 16. Drafts for softball will follow tryouts excluding the 4/6 Division which will be at 10 a.m., Feb. 16.Opening day is March 9 for baseball and March 16 for softball. FISHING REGULATIONS: SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. — Anglers can find the new 2013 Georgia Sport Fishing Regulations Guide online and in print, announces the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD).

The 2013 Georgia Sport Fishing Regulations Guide provides helpful information, including color fish identification charts for both freshwater and saltwater fish, license purchasing information, contact information for WRD fisheries management offices and WRD law enforcement offices, trout stream listings, public fishing area information, state record fish listings and complete fishing regulations for Georgia.
