LOCAL SPORTS BRIEFS: Griffin High state playoff football tickets on sale

Tickets to Griffin High’s first-round state playoff football game Friday against Monroe will be on sale at the school from 7:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today and Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Friday.

The price is $10 per person. Kickoff between Region 4-AAAA second-seed and No. 5 state-ranked Griffin (9-1) and Region 1-AAAA third-place Monroe (7-3) is set for 7:30 p.m. Tickets at the gate will also be $10.

The winner of Friday’s game advances to a second-round state playoff game next week against the winner of Burke County-Perry game. Region 3-AAAA's Burke County (9-1) is No. 3 state-ranked. They have not lost since 21-14 setback in the season opener against Class AAA No. 1-state ranked Thomson.

ASKEW TOURNEY: The team of Benny Pritchard, Brett Perkins, David Lucas and Randy Crawford shot a 62 to win the second annual Bear Askew Memorial Golf Tournament recently at the Griffin City Golf Course. The event, hosted by VFW Post No. 5448, drew 72 golfers and benefited Stepping Stones.

The team of Daryl Perdue, Josh Askew, Lebus Kilgore and James Patterson (63) finished runner-up, while the team of Chad Askew, Rodney Harris, Larry Mayfield and Johnny Redd (63) placed third, and B.J. Addison, Danny Sharp, Allen Harris and Jimmy Saucedo (63) teammed up to placed fourth.

TURKEY TROT: Young Life Griffin will holds its 10th annual Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Wyomia Tyus Park in Griffin.

Entry fee, which includes a T-shirt, is $15 for those who register by Nov. 15. Thereafter, fee is $20. Race-day registration is from 7:30-8:15 a.m.

GSHF NOMINATIONS: Do you know of a stellar athlete, coach or contributor in any sports arena who deserves recognition? The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (GSHF) is calling for nominations of individuals, who may be living or deceased, to be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame. Nomination categories are 1.) Athlete, 2.) Coach/Manager, 3.) Contributor, 4.) Senior, or 5.) Multi-Sport/Combination.

All nominees go through a three-tiered screening process by committees composed of GSHF Authority members and representatives from across the state in all areas of sports.
