LOCAL SPORTS BRIEFS: Inaugural Bo Duke Banquet set for Thursday

The inaugural Bo Duke Banquet to honor heroes throughout the community is Thursday, May 3 in the cafeteria at Griffin Christian high School on the Grounds of Griffin First Assembly of God. Those expected to be honored this year include: Coach Johnny Goodrum, Dr. Curtis Jones and Brandy Wise, among others. Ticket are $10 per person.

Duke will also host the annual Bo Duke Ol’ School Classic at the Griffin Christian High School gym on the grounds of Griffin First Assembly of God Church on Saturday, May 5 beginning at 10 a.m. and lasting through the early evening hours.

PIKE CHAMBER GOLF: The Pike County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual golf tournament fund raiser on Monday, May 7, at the Cedars Golf Club, Georgia Highway 18 in Zebulon. Tee time is noon with registration beginning at 11 a.m. Registration is currently under way for players and teams. Individual golfers with a prize package are $75 and four-man teams with prize packages are $300. Registration includes golf, green and cart fees, sandwiches for lunch and dinner.

Register by April 13 and save 10 percent off individual and team fees. Tee sign sponsorships are also available for $100 each. This year’s tournament will also feature the Third Annual Golf Ball Drop. For more information, call (770) 567-2029

DREAM IN THE HOUSE: The WNBA’s Atlanta Dream will participate in a promotion called “Take the Show on the Road” this summer, and one stop will be at Griffin High School. The Dream will be at Griffin High’s gym, The House, on June 21 from 6-8 p.m. for a two-hour, fan-friendly practice session. Fans can watch the women’s professional team practice and there will be giveaways, raffles, a Q&A and autograph session with the Dream and an opportunity to win tickets to see the Dream play this season.

FREE HUNTER SAFETY COURSES: Quail Forever, in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources, Griffin Gun Club and Devotie Baptist Church, is offering free hunter safety courses at Devotie Baptist Church, 1355 Experiment St. in Griffin, as follows:

— Aug. 28 and 30 (two-night class) from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

— Oct. 2 from 6-8 p.m. Test Only

— Oct. 30 from 6-8 p.m. Test Only

— Dec. 4 from 6-8 p.m. Test Only

Other classes will be taught at different locations as follows:

— May 19 and Aug. 11, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (free lunch), at the Cherokee Rose Sporting Resort in Griffin.

— Sept. 22, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (free lunch), at the Big Red Oak Plantation in Gay, Ga.

— June 23, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. (free lunch), at the Griffin Gun Club.
