COLLEGE PARK — The Griffin High Lady Bears, in foul trouble all night and missing their senior post player Xandria Hosely, rallied from a second-half deficit to defeat the North Clayton Lady Eagles 51-47 Friday night in Region 4-AAAA Division B action on the road.

With its third consecutive win, Griffin improves to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in region play, good enough for sole possession of third place in the subregion standings. If Jonesboro’s girls defeated Riverdale Friday, Griffin would jump to second place. North Clayton falls to fourth place at 10-9, 6-5.

Griffin took a 15-12 lead after the first quarter but went into a serious drought in the second. After taking a 21-14 lead with 6:00 left until halftime, the Lady Bears didn’t score again. North Clayton went on a 13-0 run to take a 27-21 lead at the half.

The teams scored 9 points each in the third quarter for the 36-30 Lady Eagles lead and that’s when the Lady Bears of Griffin went to work. Trailing 38-30 at the start of the fourth, Griffin went on a serious run. Despite being outrebounded without Hosely, who was out sick, the Lady Bears hung tough, swung the ball and got good shots to go on a 10-2 run and tie the game at 40-all.

Ashton Elliott’s baseline jumper gave Griffin the 42-40 lead but North Clayton made 2 free throws to tie the game at 42 with 3:15 left in regulation. North Clayton’s Alejandra Anderson then made a jumper to give the Lady Eagles a 44-42 lead a minute later.

Griffin guard Shacoria Jones took over from there. She hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Lady Bears a 45-44 lead at the 2:05 mark but Anderson sank a free throw to tie the game at 45-all seconds later. Jones wasn’t fazed. She dropped a knockdown trey at the 1:00 mark to seal the game, giving the Lady Bears a lead they wouldn’t relinquish at 48-45.

Jones scored the final 3 points for Griffin and Anderson scored the last basket for NC with 5 seconds left for the final 51-47 margin. Jones led all scorers with 19 points and snagged 3 rebounds and Aurelia Mangham added 12 for Griffin. Anderson scored 16 and Christal Williams chipped in 12 for North Clayton.

The Lady Bears next game is today against Northside-Warner Robins at The House at 5 p.m.
