ALBANY, Ga. - The Spalding Lady Jaguars track and field team did pretty well at the 2009 Girls State Track & Field Meet Saturday afternoon, fielding two finalists.
Sophomore Jenna Wesley and the 4x400 relay team of Dominique Nock, Stanariel Phinazee, Shay Wright and Wesley all qualified for the state finals yesterday afternoon. Wesley qualified in the 1600 and 800 meter runs.
Wesley ran a 2:23 in the 800 meter run, where she finished seventh, and later ran the 1600 meter run, finishing sixth. She won medals for both events.
The 4x400 relay team ran a 4:08 to finish in eighth place and receive a team medal for the finish.
Shakeva Richards and Nock qualified for state in the shot put and long jump, respectively. Richards didn’t make the finals in her event, tossing the shot at 32-7 to place 12th. Nock barely missed making the finals in the long jump, placing ninth with a jump of 16’-11.
Phinazee also barely missed the cut in the 400 meter dash, placing ninth with a time of 1:00 flat.
“It was pretty hot out there and none of my girls finished where they wanted to, that’s for sure,” said Lady Jags head coach Dolores Owen. “I’m real proud of them, however. For some of them, it’s their first time here and they really worked hard and did their best.”
Owen believes her team has a great shot to win state next year, because every one of the girls who qualified for state in 2009 will be back next season.
“I’ve got them all coming back, so we’ll be ready for state next year,” she said. “Hopefully, we’ll have some young ones coming in and they’ll add to our success.”
