Spalding improves to 5-9 overall and 2-5 in region play while Griffin falls to 9-11, 5-4.
Spalding spoiled Senior Night at Griffin High Wednesday, competing like they wanted to make up for losing 9-1 to Griffin last year.
The Lady Jags started the first inning with a bang. Whitney Combs was hit by a pitch from Griffin senior Cleopatra Randolph and was sacrificed to second base by Haedyn Kilgore. Zorria Mann then singled home Combs for the 1-0 lead and Mann took second on the throw home. After Lora Rape walked, Mann took third on a wild pitch and eventually scored on an error for the 2-0 Spalding lead.
Spalding had a chance for at least one more run in the second. Jessica Bunn singled with two outs but Griffin senior Katelyn Handley robbed the next batter, McKenleigh Kilgore, of a possible triple with a lunging catch in left field that had both the Spalding and Griffin crowds on their feet.
Spalding was unfazed by Handley’s catch, scoring three more runs in the third with the only hit being an RBI single from Jennifer Viera which scored Mann for the 5-0 lead.
Griffin could only muster one hit — a single by Randolph — off Spalding’s Rape after three innings. Rape made her pitches count, striking out 7 Lady Bears in those three innings. The Lady Bears played better defensively after the first three innings, with right fielder Destiny Holston even throwing out two Lady Jags at first base.
Griffin finally dented the scoreboard in the fifth. Randolph got her second hit of the game and her teammate Pinky Hamm ran for her. Senior Ramesha Risper hit a shot to third base and Haedyn Kilgore tried to get the force out at second, but the ball rolled all the way to right field and Hamm scored to cut the Spalding lead to 5-1. Risper scored on a wild pitch make the score 5-2.
The Lady Jags held firm after that, scoring two more runs in the seventh for the final 7-2 margin. Despite the loss, Griffin still leads the series 11-8.
Spalding’s next game is today at region foe North Clayton at 5:30 p.m. while Griffin travels to face non-region foe Howard High on Sept. 24.
