Most of the state and federal officials representing Spalding County will be running unopposed in July and November.

Of the officials who had to go to Atlanta to qualify for re-election, only District 3 U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland will have opposition. Westmoreland, of Sharpsburg, faces two challengers in the Republican primary on July 31.

Republicans Kent Kingsley of Milner and Chip Flanegan of Jonesboro qualified Thursday to challenge Westmoreland for the seat. The revised district includes all of Spalding, Lamar, Pike, Upson, Meriwether, Troup, Harris, Heard, Coweta and Carroll counties and portions of Henry, Fayette and Muscogee counties.

"Local incumbents mostly unopposed"

Why? Are others not qualified? Afraid to run? Is there such a "good ole boy" system in place that others are afraid of having their lives ruined by opposing the incumbents? Apathetic maybe and see your rep as good enough? Maybe I'm missing something here but having the same person hold an office their entire life can not be good. We need new faces with new ideas (from BOTH parties).
