Memorial service for Martha McDaniel on Sunday

The memorial service for former commissioner and community leader Martha McDaniel is 3 p.m. Sunday at St. George’s.

McDaniel, 71 of Griffin, passed away Friday, at her residence. She served aa Spalding County Commissioner from 1991-2002, serving as chairman, and as president of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia during her two terms.

McDaniel was a member of Georgia Future Communities Commission in 1997, Griffin-Spalding Development Authority, Griffin Historical Preservation Commission, past president of the Griffin-Spalding Historical Society, member of the Garden Club of Griffin, former member of Griffin Rotary Club, former member of the Griffin Chapter NAACP and past Griffin Woman of the Year.

County Commissioner Eddie Freeman, who served with McDaniel on the Development Authority, said she “certainly will be missed. She was a tremendous asset to the community.”

Griffin Branch NAACP President Jewel Walker-Harps said “as an organization, we greatly regret the passing of Martha McDaniel. We recognize the invaluable services she provided to the community.”

Walker-Harps said, “She was an asset to the NAACP and always available. She was a good, stern supporter of human and civil rights.”

She said, “we extend our condolences to the family. Griffin and Spalding County is a better place because of the service she provided.”

Spalding County also sent this notice Friday evening “It is with deep remorse that we inform you of the passing of former Spalding County Commissioner Martha McDaniel. Mrs. McDaniel served as County Commissioner from Jan. 1, 1991 until Dec. 31, 2002. Of these years, Mrs. McDaniel served as chairman, ACCG president and several other different roles. As we mourn the passing of Mrs. McDaniel and praise the work she did for the community and state, please keep her family in your prayers.”

She was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church, where she retired after 20 years as administrator of St. George’s Court. In lieu of flowers her family requests donations be made to St. George’s School, 103 Birch St., Milner, GA 30257 or St. George’s Episcopal Church, 132 N. 10th St., Griffin, GA 30223 in her memory.

McDaniel was preceded in death by her parents, Duane Barclay Wilson and Ruth Devane Wilson. She is survived by her husband, William S. McDaniel; son and daughter-in-law, Barkley Devane and Jennifer McDaniel; grandson, Henderson Stokes McDaniel and granddaughter, Lucy Xin Chu McDaniel.

The memorial service for Martha Wilson McDaniel will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church. Rev. Nancy Shepherd will officiate.
