From the Annals of 1958

Kalamazoo Vegetable Parchment Company President Dwight L. Stocker announced that his firm planned to locate a plant in Griffin.

Navy Seaman Ronnie Anderson, ward of Mrs. Sarah Norwood of Experiment, and husband of the former Earnestine Parks of Experiment, served aboard the Pacific Fleet Icebreaker USS Staten Island. Before entering the Navy in January 1956, Anderson attended Fairmont High School.

Six brothers and sisters had their tonsils removed all at the same time at Griffin-Spalding Hospital. They were the sons and daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Bill McKinnis of Hapeville, formerly of Barnesville. The children were Cathy, 2; Christa Marie, 4; Paul Michael, 11; Lynn, 2; Stephen, 8; and Larry 6.

Miss Barbara Jean Rogers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Rogers of Griffin, won the title of Miss Standard Oil at a beauty contest held in Atlanta and received an 18-inch trophy. She was attending Massey Business College.

Seaman Recruit James E. Boles of the U.S. Navy completed recruit training in Orlando, Fla. He was the son of James R. Boles of Griffin.

Keith T. Head graduated from the Navy recruiting training center in Orlando, Fla. He was the son of Patricia Walker.

Stan Bozeman was one of seven people chosen as a member of the board of directors of the Griffin Area Chamber of Commerce. Other directors are Arthur Hammond, Mildred Rainwater, David Bolton, Bob Glover, Harry Kierbow and Bill Thielemann.

Former Griffin Postmaster James Chappell returned here for the enrollment of a Moose Lodge Class. He was the general governor of the Supreme Lodge of the World, Loyal Order of the Moose, Mooseheart, Ill. Chappell was a past governor of the Griffin Lodge. Members, their wives, and members of the Women of the Moose were invited to participate in the special enrollment.

With $20,000 of state grant in hand, Spalding County was ready to begin planning for a sexual-assault prevention and rape crisis center. The Spalding County Collaborative Authority for Families and Children administered the grant and sought volunteers for its sexual-assault prevention task force.

Professional Automotive Repair opened for business. The business, between Chick-fil-A and Dairy Queen, was owned by Doug Stone and Danny Ward, who had been in the business for more than 20 years. Both automotive repair professionals received technical training and are certified by both General Motors and Ford.

Taylor Street Middle School’s football team claimed the city championship or the second year in a row with a 20-12 win over cross-town rival Flynt Middle School.

Griffin City Commissioners Carlton Imes and Tom Perdue were two of 25 Georgia city officials to receive a certificate of attendance for the 15th annual Leadership Institute for Municipal Elected Officials in Athens. The three-day Leadership Institute, co-sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, featured nationally recognized training development consultants and speakers.

The Spalding County Parks and Recreation Department in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) once again sponsored the Summer Food Service Program to ensure that children 18 years of age and under continued to receive nutritious meals when school was not in session.

Spalding County Parks and Recreation and the City of Griffin held a free Youth Fishing Festival at the City Park Gold Course Lake for children 12 and under.

The Griffin Golf team of coach Rusty Hudson, Jonathon Payne, Dillon Barnhart, Gerry Tuggle, David Lamb, Brad Wesley and Brandon Smith held its year-end banquet recognizing the senior players with plaques, with the Low Medalist Award going to Lamb, a four-year letterman. Lamb also received the Highest GPA Award.

Good Life Ministries presented a gospel play, “The Good Fruit,” at the Griffin Auditorium. Griffin High ROTC were the ushers, brought in the colors and posted the flags.

Griffin’s Nicholas Bland was given the Glaxo Smith Kline Patient Care Award by the UGA College of Pharmacy for exemplary performance during clinical rotation.

Griffin High graduates Amy Belaus and Stefan Griffith were selected to attend the United States Military Institute in West Point, N.Y. They planned to study aviation at West Point.

The Kiwanis Club of Griffin awarded scholarships to 12 area high school students including Sambita Basu, Rachel Stewart, Tyler Rawlings, Shelly Todd, Tabitha Nelson, Taylor Higgins, Alexander Cannon, Mackenzie Martin, Tara Vogel, Turner Grogan, Courtney Ware and Bahir Howard.

Danny Kendrick retired from his position as director of transportation for the Griffin-Spalding County School System after 31 years of service.

Spalding High School senior Taylor Higgins signed a cheerleading scholarship with the University of Kentucky.
