From the Annals of 1910

Clay R. Hale, for many years rate and billing clerk for the Central of Georgia Railroad Company at this place, went to Macon, where he had accepted a position with the auditing department of the Georgia, Southern and Florida Railway Company. He was succeeded by Glessner Jones, who had been working in the freight office for some time.

Major M.J. Daniel reported that the Odd Fellows’ Parade in Atlanta was one of the longest and best he ever saw. Maj. Daniel, by the way, took an important part in the parade, being in command of one of the divisions.

Mrs. James A. Stewart was the hostess at a delightful bridge in honor of Mrs. Lewis Lively, of Tallahassee, Fla., the guest of her cousin, Mrs. Lucius Goddard. The house was prettily decorated with ferns and growing plants. After the game delicious refreshments were served, consisting of hot rolls, chicken and brain croquettes, peach pickle, toasted cheese wafers, asparagus and mayonnaise.

Mrs. Joseph M. Thomas entertained very informally at bridge in honor of her house guest, Miss Addie Hallyburton. Mrs. Thomas had the happy faculty of making her guests thoroughly at home and on this occasion the charm of her hospitality was never more in evidence.

Army Spc. 4 David Barnes, son of Mrs. Irene O. Barnes of Griffin, participated with other personnel from the 8th Infantry Division’s 8th Calvary in supervising the 7th Army tank gunnery in Bergen-Hohne, Germany. Barnes graduated from Griffin High School in 1954 and attended Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.

Army Pvt. Roger E. Fletcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil H. Fletcher of Griffin, was a member of the 328th Ordnance Battalion in Italy. Fletcher attended Griffin High School.

Navy Fireman Marvin Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Barnes of Griffin, was serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La conducting underway training at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Donald Powell Allen of Griffin enlisted for three years in the United States Army. He is a 1958 graduate of Griffin High School.

Robert M. Jones received his master of church music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is the son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Wood of Griffin.

Two Griffinites were among the 15th graduating class at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kan. The students were Paul Favors and Clarence Roberts.

Ramona Leigh Jester of Milner was among the 2,000 graduates at Duke University. She is the daughter of Mrs. Jessie Jester of Milner.

Ben Mixon of Griffin was one of 17 soloists featured in a concert of Bach’s Mass in B minor at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Josh Raines of Jonesboro, and a student at Griffin Technical College, won $1,500 in Bosch tools and $500 in cash by winning the Bosch FutureTech Challenge, a woodworking competition.

Leah Hutto of Brooks was named to the spring semester dean’s list at Maryville College. The daughter of Ed and Grace Hutto graduated from Griffin High School and was majoring in sign language.

Ashley A. Ficklen of Griffin attended Spectacles Math and Science Camp for middle school girls at Wesleyan College. The daughter of Gina Ficklen attended Taylor Street Middle School.

Tammy Michelle Shaw of Sunny Side was named to the fall and spring dean’s list at Clayton College & State University.

Spalding County 4-H member Ashton Shellnut proudly paraded the United States flag during a tribute to our armed forces during the 4-H horse presentation during the Spalding County Fair.

Marissa Mathis received the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Independent Order of Odd Fellows Education Foundation scholarship award from Edward Stallings, regional chairman of the Odd Fellows Warren Lodge 20.

Members of the eighth-grade class from CrossPointe Christian Academy held a bake sale to raise funds for their trip to Savannah. A special Castle Cake was auctioned off.

Joyce Hughes, a coordinator with the Linus Project in Griffin, an organization that makes blankets for ill and traumatized children, worked on a blanket at the Spalding County Senior Citizens Center. The group holds three or four “sew days” a year at the center to make blankets.
