Mr. Lawrence ‘Calvin’ Sledge

Mr. Lawrence “Calvin” Sledge, age 88 of Dunedin, Florida, formally of Griffin, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2012 after 8 years with Alzheimer’s.

Mr. Sledge was born on August 29, 1924 to the late Guy and Epsie Sledge. In addition to his parents he is also preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Ruth Smith Sledge; sister, Ruby Hamby Johnson; brother, Roland Sledge.

Mr. Sledge is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Connie Baker Sledge; daughter and son-in-law, Connie Sledge Dean and husband Doug; step-daughter Lori Dawson and husband Robert; step-son, Patrick Baker; grandchildren: Casey Dean Shinault, Jaime Dean Gantz and husband Terry, Benjamin and Alexander Dawson; great-grandchildren, Katie Shinault, and Tyler and Adam Gantz; sister-in-law, Annette Sledge; niece, Sharon Smith Stephens; nephews, Terry,Greg, and Tim Hamby and Keith Sledge.

Visitation for Mr. Sledge will be Saturday, November 24, 2012 from 11:00am until 1:00pm at the home of Robert Smith, Griffin Georgia, followed by an informal reception. Mrs. Janet Dougherty Bolton Krepps

September 14, 1958—Nov. 21, 2012

Janet Dougherty Bolton Krepps, surrounded by family and friends, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Janet was born on Sept.14, 1958 to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Adams Dougherty and grew up on Cabin Creek Golf Course and remained in Griffin the rest of her life.

She was preceded in passing by her father, Ralph A. Dougherty, her brother, Mark Edgar Dougherty and her previous husband, David Maddox Bolton. She is survived by her mother Gracella Dougherty; husband Arthur C. Krepps III; two sons Hamilton Bolton and Adam Peeples; and four stepchildren, Russell Bolton, Brooke Bolton Stortz, Cody Krepps and Katherine Krepps; along with their spouses and several grandchildren. Janet’s family also includes Rick and Randy Dougherty and Cathy Dougherty Marshall, along with several in-laws, nieces, nephews and many friends who she considered family.

Janet began her career with Eastern Airlines as a flight attendant. She treated her passengers onboard like it was her party and she never met a stranger. After 10 years she moved on to Griffin Hardware and then later started 1893 Gift House, “Tickled Pink.”

Janet was devoted to her family, friends and puppies. She was always caring and doing for others. She was simplistic, loved to cook, play games and entertain. She was always asking, “What can I do for you today?” She enjoyed her time at Jackson Lake and “lived life, laughed often and loved much”. She fought a courageous battle with cancer for over nine years with dignity, grace, and a sense of humor. She was always optimistic and thinking of others. Janet touched the lives of many and the legacy she leaves will live on in our hearts forever and a day.

The celebration of her life will be on Friday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church. Reverend Kevin Lobello will officiate. Interment will follow at Cabin Creek Golf Course.

William LeGer Simons

June 3, 1925—Nov. 18, 2012

William LeGer “Bill” Simons, age 87 of Griffin, passed away Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012 at his son Robert Simons’ residence.

Mr. Simons was born in Atlanta on June 3, 1925 to the late Taveau Mitchell Simons and the late Jane Lance Read Simons. He was preceded earlier this year by his wife of 61 years, the late Elizabeth Ann Neel Simons. During World War II, Mr. Simons served in the U.S. Navy. When he and his wife Elizabeth moved to Griffin in 1952, he owned and operated Orchard Hill Lumber Company, and later was an owner/operator partner of Quality LP Gas Company. Mr. Simons attended and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Griffin

Bill was an avid sports participant throughout his life and in 2010 was inducted into the Griffin Spalding County Athletic Hall of Fame. He attended Boy’s High in Atlanta and graduated in 1943. While in high school, he was a member of the tennis team, track team, basketball team and cross country team, all of which he lettered. He first attended Emory at Oxford and then graduated from the University of Georgia, with a degree in Business in 1949; while at the University of Georgia he was a member of the 1948 and 1949 tennis team, lettering both years. In Griffin, Bill was the City Golf champion 1957, 1958, 1959, 1961 and 1975. He set the course record with a 64 in 1960. In tennis, he was state Senior Open winner in doubles in 1993 (65 years and older), USTA Senior Indoor Open doubles champ 1993 (65 and older), Crackerland doubles champ 1992, 1994 and 1995 (65 and older), Georgia State Adult Open doubles champ 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000 (65 and older), and Griffin champion 1992 men’s doubles.

Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, Billy Simons, Robert “Robby” and Elizabeth “Eli” Simons, all of Griffin; daughter and son-in-law, Ann Neel Simons Hearn and Stephen Tobolowsky of Los Angeles, California; grandchildren, Bonnie Simons, Robert and William Tobolowsky, Sarah and Keating Simons.

A Celebration of Life service for Mr. Bill Simons will be held Wednesday, Nov.28, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the Sanctuary of the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Brian McCartney will lead the service; friends may also visit the family in the Parlor from 1:00 p.m. until the start of the service.

Mr. William Mack Feltman, 71, of Griffin, passed away Monday, Nov. 19, 2012 at the Spalding Regional Hospital.

Mr. Feltman was born Dec. 24, 1940 to the late Walter Mack and Velma Feltman.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine Feltman of Griffin; daughter, Denise Feltman of Newnan; son and daughter-in-law, Mack and Angela Feltman of Stockbridge; step-sons, Scott Beatenbaugh of Williamson, Tom Beatenbaugh of Forest Park and Tony Beatenbaugh of Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Feltman of Griffin and Gene Feltman of Jonesboro, sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Melvin Lunsford of Dallas, Ga.; and nieces, nephews and other family.

Little Miss Morgan Angeline Ferrell, 1 ½ month old daughter of Michael and Heather Ferrell of Griffin, passed away on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at Children’s Health Care of Atlanta of Egleston.

In addition to her parents she is survived by a sister Patricia; grandparents, James and Ann Gallagher, Charla Wilson, Marion and Wendy Ferrell; great grandfather, William Walters; aunts, Gloria and Beth; uncle David and several cousins.

Visitation will be on Friday, November 23, 2012 from 6:00pm until 8:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home.
