The city of Griffin will hold an open house at One Griffin Center, at the intersection of Solomon and Hill streets, from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30.
“The open house and dedication ceremony is, of course, open to the public and we would like everyone in the community to know they are invited to attend,” City Manager Kenny Smith said in a press release.
Griffin Mayor Doug Hollberg was a major advocate for consolidating city functions in one building.
“I am extremely proud of the progress the city of Griffin has made during the last several years and one of the indicators of the progress is One Griffin Center,” he said.
He said having all city departments - except for police and fire - under one roof makes much more sense for the taxpayers and enables those engaged in business with multiple departments to get it all done in one location rather than going from site to site.
Commissioner Bill Landrum, who served as mayor in 2007, agrees with Hollberg.
“It is just so much easier for citizens to conduct business with us now, as compared to when we had city departments in multiple buildings all over the downtown area,” he said in a press release. “I am proud of the fact that I was chairman when we, as a city, took the progressive steps necessary to consolidate our operations.”
Smith said the dedication ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. with the unveiling of the dedication plaque. Residents attending the event should use the Solomon Street entrance, as refreshments will be available and building tours will begin in the Griffin Board of Commissioners chambers.
Assistant to the City Manager James Landham said the city plans to provide residents with an informative experience.
“We basically will have people available from each department to provide guided tours of One Griffin Center from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.,” he said.
He said he does not know what the turnout will be, so the city has prepared to take many people through the building.
Tours will include the first floor or basement level, which contains the Electric Department and the “war room,” where the city plans for natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes. The tour will also include the customer service section on the street level, and the planning and zoning offices, city manager’s office and public works offices, which are on the third floor. Officials will be available to take interested visitors on tours of the human resources office, located on the fourth floor, and the information technology office, located on the fifth floor.
