For the second time this week, a wastewater overflow has been attributed to roots and grease in the line.

On Thursday, the City of Griffin Water & Wastewater Division reported that 2,925 gallons of untreated wastewater overflowed into Grape Creek, between 10:05 and 11 a.m., Thursday morning. Wastewater officials said the spill occured on Hamilton Boulevard about three manholes east of the the bridge over Grape Creek.

This follows an overflow Tuesday of 2,925 gallons of untreated wastewater into an unnamed tributary that flows into Ison Branch. That spill flowed from 9:50 a.m. to 10:55 a.m., according to the Wastewater Division.

Wastewater officials said heavier rains tend to clean the pipes and push stuff loose, and things like sewer roots and grease get packed in there. Both lines have be cleaned and are back online.

In both instances, the city’s Water & Wastewater Division said it is following all Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division requirements including evaluating need for additional repairs, stream monitoring and public notices.

The Water & Wastewater Division has a staff of 26 full-time employees who inspect, test and make repairs to the systems which includes 220 miles of sewer lines carrying sewage to four wastewater treatment plants. The staff is trained and certified to address any problems that may lead to sewer overflows,

The city has cleared, televised, smoke tested all the sewer lines in the city in four phases of rehabilitation at this time as well as maing repairs and replacing lines as needed.

The Water & Wastewater Division asks the public for assistance in reporting any potential sewer overflow or maintenance problem they may see to assure a timely response and proper assessment and correction by city staff.
