The Spalding County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) responded to a location on Old Atlanta Road Tuesday in reference to a person being shot.

According to a press release by the SCSO, officers made contact with both the shooter and the victim when they arrived at the scene at 4768 Old Atlanta Road. The shooter was identified as 30-year-old Richard Bivens, of Locust Grove. The victim was an officer with the Griffin Police Department (GPD) who was not on duty at the time of the incident.

Investigators with the SCSO learned that the incident involved a domestic situation between the GPD officer and the shooter, who is the ex-boyfriend of the female with whom the officer was visiting at the time of the incident. This domestic situation over the female got out of control, resulting in the GPD officer being shot once in the hip area, the release stated.

The GPD officer was turned over to emergency medical personnel with non-life threatening injuries. Bivens, meanwhile, was taken into custody and charged with battery. He has since made bond on that charge.

SCSO investigators reportedly are working with the district attorney’s office regarding the shooting part of the investigation. Due to conflicting stories, investigators are going back to what was told to them during the start of the investigation.

Bivens stated that he shot the officer in self-defense. He further stated that at the time of the incident, he didn’t know that the person he shot was an officer with the GPD.

The SCSO said the investigation continues in this matter, and information regarding the conclusion of the investigation will be released by Sheriff Wendell Beam.
