Two matches, two mercy-rule shutouts for the Spalding High Lady Jags soccer team.

Li Anne Harris and Ann Marie Martinez scored three goals each to lead the No. 8 state-ranked Lady Jags to the 10-0 whipping of the Mt. Zion-Jonesboro Lady Bulldogs Wednesday evening in their home opener at Memorial Stadium.

Spalding improves to 2-0 overall while Mt. Zion starts the season at 0-2.

The young Lady Jags got the ball rolling with a goal from Martinez at the 36:18 mark of the first half on a nice assist from teammate Reece McIver. McIver then scored her own goal seven minutes later to give Spalding the 2-0 lead. Taylor Thompson’s sweet cross shot put the Lady Jags up 3-0 and Martinez’ second goal gave Spalding the comfortable 4-0 lead at halftime.

Spalding was never really challenged by Mt. Zion in the non-region contest, as the Lady Bulldogs barely had shots on goal. Lady Bulldogs sophomore Lauren Smith did all she could, but it wasn’t enough to get any momentum for the visitors.

The second half was all Spalding. Lady Jags freshman Buffi Tillman scored a goal at the 27:50 mark for the 5-0 lead and the floodgates opened on Mt. Zion. Harris and Martinez scored two goals for a 7-0 lead and Marissa Hendrix scored minutes later for the 8-0 margin. Harris smartly stole a keeper kick and then scored Spalding’s ninth goal and her breakaway goal with 3:58 remaining ended the contest at 10-0 due to the mercy rule.

The Lady Jags get back in action Tuesday, Feb. 26 as they host Region 4-AAAA foe Jonesboro High at 5:30 p.m.
