“It was a very tough course,” said Spalding High coach Dolores Owen. “There were a lot of great teams there. Out of the 12, eight are state-ranked.”
“As always, our teams gave everything they had,” added Owen.
Blair Dunaway led Spalding with a PR of 23:26 to place 33rd out of 100 runners in the girls varsity division. Also running for the Lady Jags were: Stephanie Estrada (23:27) in 34th, LiAnne Harris (24:06) in 44th, Grenishia Daniel (25:15) in 56th, McKenzie Dallas (25:31) in 57th and Emma Johnston (26:03) in 63rd as well as Alisha Jordan (27:46) in 74th.
Benjamin Parker (17:47) was a medal winner and finished 6th out of 140 runners to lead Spalding in the boys varsity division.
“He beat three Westminster boys, and they have won the state championship the last 10 years in a row as a team,” said Owen. “He is going to be a good one, we just have to do some work during track season to correct a few things on his start finish techniques.”
Also running for the Jags were: Ryan Silvis (PR 19:13) in 41st, Evan Davis (19:53) in 59th, Brett Piland (19:57) in 62th, Johnathan Mitchell (20:07) in 64th, Christian Gray (20:09) in 65th and Daniel Blake (20:12) in 66th as well as Jon Eady (20:44) in 79th.
“Ryan Silvis continues to impress me with his big heart,” said Owen. “Evan Davis, my other freshman runner, had a good run. I’m hoping we can get him below the 19’s before region. Another runner I have been so pleased with is Johnathan Mitchell. He finished 64th in 20:07, but he has made it known he wants to run on varsity in the region meet. Christian Gray, another young runner who has impressed me with his desire this season, is also pushing for a shot at varsity.”
On the JV girls side we had some PRs: Jasmine Bradley 27:55, Sydney Flatt 29:56, Laney Ballard 27:36. Other JV runners for Spalding included: Hope Lovelady 28:28, LeeAnn Frank 28:56 and Dallas Wynne 27:33 as well as Jakiya Stinson 29:57.
“I was proud of all the JV girls they had good runs and good times on a hard course,” said Owen.
On the boys JV side: James Ogletree had a PR of 21:55. Cornelius Henderson had a 21:04, Caleb Holton a 21:35, Jess Piland 21:25, Aaron Moss at 20:56, Austin Peek 22:07, Takuyah Gatlin 22:37, Jergevious Glover in 23:15, Kurt Hudson in 23:45, Matt Voight in 24:11 and Will Davis in 28:24.
Spalding’s next meet is Saturday at the Last Chance in Carrollton. It is Spalding’s last outing before the Region 4-AAAA meet on Nov. 1 at SHS.
“It is truly our last chance to see what we can pull together as a team,” said Owen. “It will give me a heads up selecting the top seven to run at region on Nov.1.”
The region meet on Nov.1 starts with the JV run at 4:30 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 5 p.m., and varsity boys at 5:30 p.m.
“I hope the community will come out and watch a great bunch of kids go out and try to become the best they can be on that day,” said Owen.
