Fifth-place Spalding (11-11 overall, 5-9 subregion) lost for the third time in the last four games, while fourth-place North Clayton (11-13, 7-7) snapped a five-game losing streak and in the process sweeping the regular season series between the two teams.
This time, Spalding came much closer to victory than it did in a 53-38 loss Jan. 15 at North Clayton. Even though the Lady Jags trailed 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, 23-18 at the half and by as much as 15, 41-26, going into the fourth quarter, Spalding managed to cut the lead to six points midway through the fourth.
They lost it briefly, but got it back to six, 49-43, on a shot by Shaquoria Reid with just over two minutes to play. By the time they cut it to five, 56-51, on a shot by Veronica Anderson with :04 left, the game was a foregone conclusion.
Rounding out Spalding’s leading scorers were Reid (8 points) and Grenishia Daniel and Desiree Corbin (7 each). Crystal Williams scored a game-high 28 to lead North Clayton while teammate Kiki Harden (11) also reached double figures.
Spalding closes out the regular season Tuesday at last-place Upson-Lee at 6 p.m.
