ALBANY, Ga. — Senior Dominique Nock continues to shine for Spalding High in the Class AAA state track and field championships at Hugh Mills Stadium. Nock, who qualified second in the 200-meter dash with a school-record run of 24.75 and fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.51 on opening day Thursday, finished third in the long jump Friday.

The finals are today, beginning with opening ceremonies at noon.

Spalding also qualified for the finals in the 4x100 relay where Grenisha Daniel, Shaquoria Reid, Veronica Anderson and Dominique Nock ran the seventh fastest qualifying time (48.55) on opening day.

Longtime Spalding High coach Dolores Owen is excited, especially about the prospects facing Nock today who is looking to give the SHS Lady Jags an individual event state champ three years in a row — Jenna Wesley won the 800-meter run as a junior in 2010 and a senior in 2011.

“Dominique ran a school-record 24.75 in 200 and I think she has a chance to win it,” Owens said of Knock’s prospects in the 200 where only Monroe Academy’s Javianne Oliver had a better qualifying time (24.36) in the 200 preliminaries.

Owen also likes Nock’s chances in the 100.

“She pulled up a little at the end of the 100,” Owen said of Nock an event where only Oliver (11.84), West Hall’s Maia Booker (12.40) and Washington County’s Morgan Jordan (12.40) had better qualifying times. “So I think she can place in the top three there.”

Other Spalding High athletes to compete this week have included Dee Dee Matthews in the triple jump and Daniel in the 300-meter hurdles.

Matthews leaped a personal-record 36-foot-2 to qualify for the finals where she finish ninth, an inch away from scoring a team point. Daniel, meanwhile, ran a 47.13 to miss qualifying for the finals by three spots.

“Every girls in her heat (except for one) ran faster than her,” Owen said of the faster of the two qualifying heats. “But it’s not bad considering she had never run it before in her life (prior to this season).”

The Lady Jags 4x400 team of Daniel, Reid, Anderson and Nock also just missed qualifying for the finals by placing ninth with a time of 4:05.54.

“We would have had to have run our best time of the year,” said Owen. “We were in the faster heat.”
