As the calendar turned from January to February 24 hours ago, it was time to get ready for those whose passions or interests lie in the spring sports. With good reason, too.

The Spalding High tennis team travels Tuesday to Forsyth for its season opener at Mary Persons before taking on Newnan 4:30 p.m., Thursday in the Jags’ home opener. The Spalding boys team returns all of its players from last year’s state semifinal team.

The Spalding High boys soccer team kicks off the season Thursday with a scrimmage at Campbell before playing its home and season opener 7:30 p.m., Feb. 12 against Henry County. The Spalding High girls soccer team plays its home and season opener 7:30 p.m., Feb. 15 against Troup.

Also on Feb. 15, the Griffin High and Spalding High baseball teams host preseason scrimmages — Griffin at 5 p.m. against Strong Rock and Spalding at 5 p.m. against Jackson. Griffin follows with its season opener Feb. 18 in Columbus against Russell County (Ala.) before playing its home opener at 5:55 p.m. Feb. 27 against Stockbridge. Spalding plays its season opener and home opener 6 p.m., Feb. 19.

The Griffin High track team, which will be on the road all season, opens the season Feb. 14 at East Coweta. Spalding’s track team opens the season March 2 in Barnesville at the annual Ross Invitational.

Both Spalding High golf teams open the season March 6 on the road against Mary Persons at River Forest.
