The 10th annual Duck Derby will take place on June 30 at The Rock Ranch in The Rock, Ga., as part of the ranch’s annual Celebrate America event. All proceeds from the derby will benefit the academic programs at Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center.

The rubber ducks that will race down Hopeful Beaver Creek at 6:30 p.m. that day can still be adopted for $5 each, with packages being available for receiving bonus ducks. All ducks are numbered, and the first five ducks to cross the finish line will bring prizes to those who adopted them.

Prizes include a $1,000 gas card, a Big Green Egg BBQ and Nest, a 42-inch flat screen TV, an 8GB iPod, and Chick-fil-A sandwiches for a year. The first place duck has a chance of winning $1 million if its number matches a randomly pre-selected number.

Being present at the Duck Derby is not required to receive a prize, as all winners will be notified and then have 30 days to claim their prize.

According to Stepping Stones’ Executive Director Sherry Nash, this year’s goal is the adoption of 10,000 rubber ducks, which would raise about $30,000 for the school — the cost for putting the event together already being subtracted.

“It’s our biggest fundraiser, because everyone can participate,” said Nash. “It’s an easy and inexpensive way to make a big impact.”

Being a not-for-profit organization, Stepping Stones relies on donations, Nash said. Not meeting fund-raising goals could mean that the school might be unable to provide the services it has provided in the past.

“Helping the community and helping Stepping Stones is connected,” she said.

Ducks are available for adoption at Stepping Stones, which is located on Futral Road in Griffin, online at www.duckrace.com/steppingstones or at The Rock Ranch on the day of the event. Adoption papers are also available at several local businesses in town.
