Early Friday morning, at about 2:43 a.m., an officer was getting into his patrol car after exiting Jon’s Petro Gas Station, at 133 E. Taylor St., when he reportedly observed a green Ford Escort drive through the parking lot from Sixth Street, almost strike a gas pump and exit the lot on Taylor Street without stopping.
The driver, heading west, reportedly veered into the parking lane and failed to maintain his lane of travel on two separate occasions as the officer followed in his patrol car. The driver was also reportedly observed drifting back and forth within his lane of travel, and the officer, believing the driver to be under the influence of alcohol, attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The driver was eventually stopped as he pulled up to the drive-through speaker at McDonald’s. The officer approached the vehicle and upon talking with the driver the officer reportedly smelled the presence of an alcoholic beverage, believed to be coming from inside the vehicle.
