“I don’t know if Griffin has ever had two sophomores made offers by a school in the SEC,” said head coach Steve DeVoursney, in his 12th season guiding the Bears.
Both players starred at receiver for Griffin (9-2) this year — in the X and Y slots — as the Bears extended their school-record streak of consecutive state playoff appearances to 12 seasons.
Owens and Mangham were invited to attend Vanderbilt’s spring practice where DeVoursney believes they will be extended a formal offer in person.
DeVoursney said Owens will also likely receive an offer from the University of Georgia later this month when he visits Athens.
From there, the floodgates are likely to open for both players.
“It’s going to be a fun spring,” added DeVoursney. “Every SEC school has called about coming to our spring practices.”
That also frequently means more exposure for every other player on the field as the Bears learned two years ago when they had a school-record five Division I players — Xzavier Dickson (Alabama), Corey Moore (Georgia), Ty Turner (South Florida), Chandler Worthy (Troy) and Nile Daniel (Kentucky) — signed from one class.
The last sophomore from Griffin High to receive an offer from an SEC school was Johnathan Sullivan, who went on to star for Georgia before being drafted sixth overall by the New Orleans Saints in the 2003 NFL Draft.
