Everyone in the community is invited to attend the program that includes the recognition of various veterans organizations and their lady auxiliaries, the posting of service flags as a tribute to the armed forces, patriotic music and a history of Veterans Day, among other things.
The ceremony will conclude with the firing of three volleys and the sounding of Taps.
A major parking area for the ceremony will be available on the campus of the old Taylor Street Middle School, next to the Sam Bailey building and across the street from Mt. Zion Baptist Church. The Spalding County Parks and Recreation Department will provide golf carts to take people from a number of parking locations to the ceremony site.
In addition, members of the American Legion Post 15 have arranged for bleachers to be provided, though attendees of the ceremony are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.
Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans - those who returned from their service and those who paid the ultimate price. It is observed each year on Nov. 11, and the fact that this year’s Veterans Day falls on a Sunday was no reason for the local American Legion to deviate from the actual date. Only the time of the celebration will change.
“Instead of the traditional 11 a.m., we have selected 2 p.m. to give folks an opportunity to go to church, eat lunch and have time to get to Veterans Memorial Park,” said American Legion Post 15 Commander Jim King.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Kiwanis Club building on South Hill Street.
