As the calendar turned from June to July the intense summer heat picked up. So did the local athletics.
No one was hotter than Griffin’s father-son drag racing duo of Lamar Chambers and Mike Chambers who were featured on the pages of the Griffin Daily News on July 15 during another championship season — collectively their fifth in Friday Night Drags action at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
The same day the Griffin Gators took 39 swimmers to the GRPA District IV meet in Carrollton where 19 of them qualified for the state meet. Also on the same day, former Spalding High standout golfer Davin White survived the cut at the 91st State Amateur with a second-round 72 after opening the day before with a 79.
A day later, the Griffin High football team completed its summer- passing league schedule with a seventh-place finish out of 32 teams in the Southeastern 7-on-7 Championships in Dalton. Griffin’s pool — which produced four quarterfinals and three semifinalists — had teams from Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. It capped a season where Griffin, which ran two teams, combined to play in 59 passing-league games and finished runner-up in two tournaments.
On July 17, former Griffin High and Western Kentucky University standout running back Bobby Rainey was featured as he was preparing to head to camp with the Baltimore Ravens.
On July 19, the Griffin Bulldog club held its annual banquet. All in attendance at the local University of Georgia-Griffin Campus were treated to a fare from The Varsity.
On July 20, Spalding High standout golfer Tye Waller represented Georgia in the 37th annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match in Eatonton.
On July 21, eight local swimmers — Dwayne Harry, Helen Hicks, Soren Wood, Martha Hicks, Braden Stahl, Deborah Hicks, Drew Tingle and Alanna Wood — won high-point trophies as the Doug Tingle-coached Griffin Gators swim team won its sixth consecutive Griffin Gator Invitational at the Griffin City Pool, easily outdistancing itself from its nearest competitor in the eight-team field by a whopping 1,675 points.
On July 24, the McIntosh Area Auburn Club held its annual banquet at J. Henry’s. Aubie, Auburn’s national award-winning mascot, was on hand to entertain a crowd of about 50.
On July 30 and 31, local golfer Davin White shot a 76-72—148 at the Brickyard at riverside in Macon to finish six shots away from qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship.
