Austin Smith started the game on the mound for the No. 7 state-ranked Jags and pitched 3 innings before being relieved by Powell Krepps and Caleb Gavel after that, combining to give up three earned runs.
“Our pitchers gave up the three runs, but those runs came on little dink shots here and there,” said Jags head coach Mickey Moody. “It wasn’t like LaGrange crushed the ball or anything like that.”
Offensively, the Jags continued to crush the ball. Casey Moody went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, Nathan Skinner was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Zach Lerner went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Austin Hurt was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
“Overall, I was pleased with our effort. We pitched well, hit well and played good defense,” said Moody. “We’ve got a ways to go but I think we’ll get there.”
The Jags will play their home opener on Tuesday, March 1 at 6 p.m. against Mary Persons, a team they beat 8-0 on the road in the Jags’ season opener.
Spalding follows that game with an afternoon contest at Crisp Co. on March 5 and a three-game homestand from Tuesday, March 8 through Friday, March 11.
Two of the games on the homestand are against Region 4-AAA opponents Henry Co. (March 8) and Locust Grove (March 10).
