LOVEJOY, Ga. — The Spalding High boys tennis team will play for the Region 4-AAA championship at 10 a.m. today in Lovejoy against Eagle’s Landing, looking to win their first region championship since 2006 — despite runner-up finishes in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010.

Brett Piland (6-4, 6-4) at No. 1 singles, Daniel Blake (6-4, 6-1) at No. 2 singles and Colby Willis and Andrew Winter (6-3, 5-7, 6-4) at No. 1 doubles all scored points to lead SHS past Eastside-Covington 3-0 in the semifinals Wednesday afternoon.

The Jags reached the semifinals with a 3-0 opening-round win against Jackson earlier in the day as Piland (8-1) at No. 1 singles, Willis and Winters (8-0) at No. 1 doubles and Coleman Johnson and Bobby Peek (forfeit) at No. 2 doubles all scored points.

The Spalding High girls tennis team also scored a 3-0 opening-round victory against Sandy Creek to reach the semifinals where they lost 3-0 to Eagle’s Landing.

Leading the charge for the lady Jags in the opener were Emily Peek (8-1) at No. 1 singles, Bea Dallas (8-0) at No. 3 singles and Lib Moore and Sara Peek (8-6) at No. 1 doubles.
