LOCAL BRIEFS: Spalding softball tryouts set for Monday

Spalding High softball coach Rusty Hudson has announced tryouts for this year’s team will begin at 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 1 at the SHS softball field.

All players must have a physical. To pick up a form for the physical, stop by the main office during business hours.

The Spalding High Lady Jaguars were 2009 Region 4-AAA champions and they made it to the Region 4-AAA semifinals in 2010, clinching state playoff berths both seasons.

The Griffin High Lady Bears softball team will have tryouts on Aug. 8 at the GHS softball field after school is out.

CHEERLEADING:

Spalding County Cheerleading sign ups will be held from noon until 2 p.m. today at City Park Gym. Registration is $120 for new cheerleaders and $50 for returning cheerleaders.

GRIFFIN CITY CHAMPIONSHIP:

The Griffin City Championship — the local amateur version of the U.S. Open — will be held Aug. 6-7 this year. Deadline to enter this year’s tournament is Aug. 3. Fee is $75 which includes green fees, carts and lunch both days.

The tournament format is 36 hole, stroke play. Players will be paired according to GHIN handicap (if available) otherwise average score in the opening round. Flights for the second round based will be based on opening-round results with the leaders going off last on the 6,439-yard, par-72 layout which opened in 1932.

FOOTBALL:

The Spalding County Parks and Recreation Department will begin football registration on from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays through Aug. 6 at the City Park Community Center. A birth certificate must be presented at sign-ups. The age control date is the player’s age as of Sept. 1, 2011.

Any youth registering must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All registrants must be weighed at registration. Fees are $65 for ages 7-12 and $45 for ages 5-6.

Football equipment will be issued during registration. Alternatively, equipment can be obtained Aug. 9, 11, 16 or 18 from 3-8 p.m. For more info, call Angie Stokes or Robby Milner at (770) 467-4750.

SOCCER:

The Griffin Spalding Youth Soccer Association will hold registration for the upcoming season from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays through Aug. 20 at Wyomia Tyus Park in Griffin for players between the ages of 3-18.

SHS CROSS COUNTRY:

Any boy or girl who would like to run cross country for Spalding High this coming season, please contact coach Dolores Owen at (770) 891-6937 or DL1435@aol.com. You can be a middle school student or high school student to participate. Spalding High has a middle school running program. Cross country practice starts Monday, Aug. 1 at 3:30 p.m. and all runners need to meet at the gym.

LOW COUNTRY BOIL:

The Spalding High Touchdown Booster Club will sponsor a reverse raffle Low Country Boil at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Kiwanis Fairgrounds.
