Sheriff Wendell Beam said a concerned citizen’s keen eye helped deputies on Tuesday at around 1 p.m., when the concerned citizen observed a small red vehicle stop on Carver Road and drop off a male, who exited the vehicle and walked towards an abandoned house. The citizen reported the vehicle, then continued on Carver Road.
Beam said deputies from the Patrol Division, Warrant Division and Investigations responded to the location and were able to apprehend the male suspect crawling under the house and removing the copper wiring. Based on information that had been received, Beam said deputies began setting up along Carver Road to wait for the small red car to come back to pick the first suspect up.
“Within 20 minutes,” Beam said, “the small red car returned to the area and deputies stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver.”
The suspects were identified as Stephen Charles Jennings, 56, of Griffin, and John David Butler, 32, of Griffin. Jennings, who was driving, was charged with party to the crime of criminal damage to property.
Butler was charged with theft by taking (felony) and criminal damage to property. Beam said the damage to the residence exceeded $500.
