The Spalding High Lady Jaguars basketball team played much better against the Region 4-AAA-leading Drew Lady Titans Friday evening than it did in last Saturday’s 82-49 blowout loss, but scoring droughts in the second and third quarters hurt Spalding and the team fell to Drew again 63-41 in Region 4-AAA action at home.

The Lady Jags (6-13 overall, 4-7 region) actually led first-p1ace Drew 15-13 after one quarter due to easy layups after breaking the Drew press but their 7-point second quarter caused them to trail Drew 26-22 at the half.

Drew (15-4, 10-1) outscored Spalding 16-7 in the third quarter thanks to 3-pointers by Lady Titans forwards Precious Person and Brandy Sweat, while Spalding could only muster three baskets and a free throw from Dee Dee Matthews. And speaking of Matthews, she got into a small skirmish with Drew’s Kiki Henderson and got a technical foul, which seemed to fire Drew up. The Lady Titans used an aggressive trap to force turnovers and they took a 42-29 lead into the fourth quarter.

Person and Henderson took over in the fourth quarter, scoring easy buckets to lead the Lady Titans to the final 63-41 margin.

Matthews led Spalding with 13 points and 6 rebounds, followed by Grenishia Daniels with 10 points. Person scored 23 points, including 3 of 4 from the 3-point line, for Drew. Henderson added 13 and Sweat and Lakiyah Sims added 12 points each for the Lady Titans.
