Griffin, the No. 3 seed in the Class AAAA state playoffs, notched its 2010-11 win total with the victory over subregion A foe Dutchtown, winning three of its four tournament games to improve to 10-17 overall. Dutchtown, the No. 4 seed in the state playoffs, fell to 15-14 overall.
Griffin will travel several miles north on Highway 19/41 to face the 23-4 Jonesboro High Cardinals, the No. 3 team in the state, in the first round of the state playoffs Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Jonesboro High. Jonesboro lost the Region 4-AAAA title game to North Clayton 57-50 in OT, falling to the No. 2 seed in state from Region 4.
The Griffin/Jonesboro game will be the second game of a doubleheader, as the Jonesboro Lady Cardinals will host the Woodland-Stockbridge girls Friday at 6 p.m.
Griffin head coach Prelvis Paster was very happy with the win over Dutchtown Saturday.
“Hopefully this win over Dutchtown, who swept us during subregion play, will give us momentum in the state playoffs,” he said. “The guys were positive and they played with confidence and I’m proud of them. They didn’t hang their heads after the whipping Fayette County gave us.”
Instead of hanging their heads, the Bears took it to Dutchtown Saturday. It was a nip-and-tuck affair and heading into the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 36-all.
Griffin guard Anforne’ Stroud sank a 3-pointer to give the Bears a 39-36 lead at the 7:07 mark, but Dutchtown regained the lead after a 5-0 run which culminated with a trey from JoJo Fogg to put the Bulldogs up 41-39. The Bears went on a 6-0 run themselves, with the best play in the run being a behind-the-back pass from J.T. Williams to Stroud for a layup and the 45-41 Griffin lead.
But Dutchtown didn’t give up, getting two free throws and a 3-point play by Freddy Thomas sandwiched around a Kelvin Waldon layup for Griffin to trail 47-46 with 24 seconds to go.
Dutchtown then stole the ball from Griffin, but Bears guard Jaquez Parks stole the ball back and was fouled with 17.6 seconds remaining. Parks calmly swished two free throws to give Griffin the 49-46 lead. Griffin played smart on defense, only allowing a layup by Dutchtown’s Montrez Metts to lead 49-48 with 2 seconds left in the game. Griffin’s Trey Willis was fouled immediately and he sank one of two free throws for the final 50-48 margin.
