Rebecca Rose Hill won 8-0 at No. 1 singles, Emily Warwick won 8-4 at No. 2 singles and Sarah Mallett won 9-8 (7-4) at No. 3 singles as the Lady Bears (8-1 overall, 3-1 region) won for the eighth time in nine matches this season.
The Griffin Boys team, meanwhile, followed it’s first win of the season — 4-1 a day earlier at Woodland-Stockbridge — with a 3-2 loss against the Greyhounds.
First-year Bears head coach James Fowler was still ecstatic with his team’s performance against Woodland a day earlier.
“It was finally good to finally get it behind us and taste victory,” said Fowler.
Scoring points in the team’s milestone victory were Dalton Vining (8-3) at No. 1 singles, Lionell Hollis (8-6) at No. 3 singles, Mahlon Robinson and Austin Lee (8-2) at No 1 doubles, and Cole Elliott and Miles Grier (8-6) at No. 2 doubles. Meanwhile the Lady Bears’ lone point on the day Wednesday in a 4-1 loss came from Sarah Mallett (8-4) at No. 3 singles.
The team didn’t have to wait long for a shot at its next victory as Hollis won 8-6 at No. 3 singles against and Robinson and Lee won again 8-2 at No. 1 doubles to tie the team match against Jones County 2-all with Cole Elliott and Bradley Durden locked in a barn burner at No. 2 doubles late into the night to decide the match. However, they eventually lost 9-7 in a thrilling match that went well past 8:15 p.m.
Griffin continues its season today with another Region 3-AAAA Division A match when it hosts Union Grove in a makeup from a rainout earlier this season.
