FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — Friday evening wasn’t a banner day for the Griffin Christian High baseball team.

The Crusaders traveled down the road to take on the home-schooled Home Plate team and lost a doubleheader 11-0 and 2-0 in non-region action.

Griffin Christian dropped its fifth straight to fall to 3-14 overall.

The Crusaders only managed a hit each from Matthew Hammond and Wil Savage in the 11-0 Game 1 loss to Home Plate, which ended in five innings. Austin Lassetter pitched all four innings for GC in that contest.

In Game 2, the Crusaders only managed a double from Matthew Hammond in the 2-0 loss that ended after three innings. Micah Mitchell pitched for GC in that short contest.

The Crusaders hosted the Atlanta Knights late Monday and travel to play GISA Region 2-AAA foe Stratford Academy today at 6:30 p.m. in a crucial game. Stratford, ranked No. 5 in the state in GISA Class AAA, has lost consecutive region games to No. 3 Mount de Sales and to Arlington Christian to fall to fourth place at 3-4 in the region standings. GC is in fifth place at 1-6 in the region with two region games left to play for both teams.

“If we beat Stratford, then we have a shot to make the playoffs. That’s all you can ask for from the guys is a shot,” said Crusaders head coach David Hammond. “The Stratford game is pretty important for us.”

The last time GC and Stratford met (March 23, Nix Field), Stratford Academy won 13-6.
