“We did excellent as a team. The girls worked extremely hard and I’m so proud of this group,” said Lady Jags head coach Dolores Owen. “We had a great day.”
The five Lady Jags who qualified for the state track meet were Dominique Nock, Dee Dee Matthews, Shaquoria Reid, Grenishia Daniel and Veronica Anderson. Twandalette Cotton will attend state as a substitute on the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
Nock, a senior, qualified in 5 events, which ties the school-record along with Stanariel “Bookie” Phinazee, who also qualified for state in five events a few years ago. Nock qualified in the 100 meters, 200 meters, the long jump and both relay teams.
Fellow senior Matthews qualified in the triple jump, Daniel qualified in the relays and the 300-meter hurdles and Reid and Anderson qualified in both relay teams.
The top 8 finishers at the Sectionals qualified for the state track meet. On Saturday, Matthews placed 5th in the triple jump at 35-11, Nock was 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 18-6, the 4x100 team of Nock, Anderson, Daniel and Reid finished 5th with a time of 48.39 and the 4x400 team (same foursome) was 6th with a time of 4:05.02.
Nock set a school-record in both the 100 and the 200, placing 1st in the 100 at 12.13 and 2nd in the 200 with a time of 25.09. Also setting a personal-record was Daniel, who placed 5th in the 300 hurdles at 46.02. Other Lady Jags who did well Saturday but missed state were Blair Dunaway, who ran a personal-best 5:57 to finish 12th in the 1600 meter run and Chadneeshia Arnold, who finished ninth in the discus throw with a toss of 95-7. Arnold missed going to state by 4 inches.
“Dominique was a beast all day. I am really proud of her,” Owen said. “I’m glad she shined at the right time. I’m so glad this group overcame the graduation of Jenna Wesley and did as well as they did. Now it’s time for a top-10 finish at state.”
