Spalding (15-4), which advanced to the second round of state with a 5-0 win last week at Grovetown just outside of Augusta, lost points Tuesday at No. 2 and No. 3 singles as well as both doubles against the Lady Raiders (18-4).
By the time Peek rallied to win her match 4-6, 6-4 and 6-4 at No. 1 singles the match was already decided.
“It was great to see her rally and win a point for herself even after the match was decided,” said Lady Jags head coach Greg Crawford.
By winning, West Lauren’s advances to a state quarterfinal-round match against No. 9-state ranked Drew. Drew, which hails from the same regional Spalding — Region 4-AAA — advanced with a 3-1 victory against Crisp County. Consequently, Spalding’s only regular season region loss this year was to Drew. At region two weeks ago, Spalding advanced to the finals where it lost to Eagle’s Landing? It was later determined EL used an ineligible player.
Nonetheless, Spalding ends the season having advanced at least to the second round of the state playoffs for the eighth year in a row and for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons.
The Region 4-AAA Spalding High boys tennis team hosts a second-round state playoff match at 1 p.m. today against Howard.
