NEW YORK — Tampa Bay prospect Tim Beckham, the overall No. 1 pick in the 2008 draft, has been suspended 50 games after a second violation of the minor league drug program.

The commissioner’s office announced the penalty Tuesday.

The 22-year-old Beckham was hitting .204 in 13 games for Triple-A Durham. The shortstop had been on the disabled list because of a sprained left wrist.

Beckham played in the All-Star Futures Game last July after a slow start in his pro career.

In a statement released by the Rays, Beckham said he’s sorry for his actions and takes “full responsibility” for his “poor judgment.”

Rays Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman said Beckham “must rededicate himself.”

According to the team’s website, the suspension came after Beckham “tested positive for marijuana for a second time. Marijuana is considered a drug of abuse and a violation under the minor league drug program.”

Beckham was drafted out of Griffin High School — after leading the Bears to the 2008 state finals — before signing a $6.15 million signing bonus. Beckham, who has been a spring training non-roster invitee with the Rays parent club in 2009, 2010 and 2011, hit .042 in 24 at-bats this spring before being reassigned to AAA Durham.

There have been 37 suspensions this year under the minor league drug program.

I agree 100% but if you look at society we are very lazy and I blame some of this on our Government. We have way too may entitlement programs that reward lazy people. One of the major problems is rewards to young girls who intentionally have babies out of wed-lock. If they need help from the tax payers they should be required to pay it back. We have a lot of good kids in Griffin, but like a lot communites we have bad apples as well. Most of the bad apples come from fatherless homes. They come from lazy mothers who have children to get government assistance so they can sell their food-stamps and WIC cards for drugs and alcohol. If we don't require some sort of accountability this cycle wil never end and we will continue to produce students that are destined for failure.

It's truly disappointing to see the number of athletes, especially from Griffin, who abuse their opportunities that most people can only dream of. Johnathan Sullivan was a top ten NFL pick a few years back and smoked his way out of the league. Beckham was a can't miss prospect who is on the verge of being a major bust. Also consider the number of Griffin athletes who don't qualify academically after they receive scholarships to play at the college level, it's truly unfortunate. I hope that someone gives them the rude awakening that everything in life won't be given to them because of athletic excellence. Hard work will be required for sustained success.
